York Mills History

The name York Mills refers to two historical points in Toronto’s history. The first being, “York” which was the name of the town before it became Toronto as we know it today. The “Mills” part of the neighbourhood’s name is derived from the grist mills and sawmills that churned in the local waterways from 1804 until 1926. The neighbourhood of York Mills had busy origins. It boasted a blacksmith shop, a tannery, a distillery, three churches, a post office, a toll gate, a school and the Jolly Miller Tavern which you can find still standing today. Another historical masterpiece you can visit from York Mills’ early days is the St. John’s Anglican church which began in 1816 as a log church and became the church we see today in 1844.
