Home Organization Tips

| Homeowners

To do what is best for ourselves and our community, most of us are staying home these days. As we spend more and more time in our own homes, I have heard from folks that their home is not as functional as they had once thought it was. If you are looking for some ways to make your home easier to use, here are some amazing home organization tips I have come across:

Make Tidying As Easy As Possible

While it may look more aesthetically pleasing to some, having lids on laundry hampers and other bins inherently makes keeping your home tidy more challenging. There are some things that must have lids, like garbage cans. In this case, try to get a lid that is opened with a lever you can step on so you can easily lift it up. If you can put something away with one hand you will be exponentially more likely to do it.

Purge First, Buy Second

In my experience I have seen people who have been on a home organization kick go to a store to buy storage containers before they have dealt with their own belongings. In order to get properly organized you first need to evaluate what you own. Create three piles: what you will use, what you will donate, and what you will throw away. Be firm with yourself as you go through this process. You might be surprised to hear that we only use 20% of what we own. Once you have slimmed down your possessions, now you can save money buy only buying storage containers you really need.

Listen To Your Room

Some home organization tips sound sillier than others but trust me on this one. If you have cleaned a room and it still does not look at its peak that is because the system you have put in place is not ideal for the space. A room should not take more than 15 minutes to tidy. Group the items in the room based on use or occasion and make sure to store them in open containers.

A Drawer Is Not Always A Solution

It is very tempting to treat every drawer in your home like a junk drawer. You can easily throw things in there and they can stay completely out of sight and out of mind. Every drawer should have a purpose, and every drawer should have organizers in them. For items that you use daily or very frequently, keep them within arm’s reach. The less often you use something, the lower in a chest of drawers you can put it.

Eliminate Dumping Spaces

Have you noticed that every flat surface in your home eventually becomes a place to dump your belongings? It is the proverbial “transient” stage before you fully put it away. Yet, very quickly, that flat surface – be it a dining room table or desk – begins to overflow. A great way to combat this is by adding a flower arrangement in the middle of your flat surface. If your flat surface is a dining room table, add placemats so you send your mind an image that this is no longer a dumping zone.

These are just a few home organization tips I have picked up along the way. Do you do any of these currently in your home? Let me know if you do!
