Elli Davis recalls being one of six real estate agents anxiously waiting to see which offer the seller would accept on a mid-Toronto house listed at $640,000.
It was April, 1988, Davis, Royal LePage's top selling agent in Canada for the past four years, edged out her competition and got the sale with an offer of $675,000 for the house in the Mount Pleasant - St. Clair Ave. area.
"It was like I won Miss America," said Davis, 41. "We all had very good offers. But only one of us could get the sale."
Despite the current tough times, Davis was not sorry to bid farewell to the panic buying climate of the late '80s.
"Everything happened so quickly then, buyers didn't have time to think. People were buying a house faster than they would a pair of shoes."
Davis, who has sold houses for Royal LePage since she left her teaching job in 1983, managed to close about 55 deals involving about $20 million worth of property, primarily in mid-town and downtown Toronto. Her efforts have garnered the highest financial return of her career and has put her in a strong position to hang on to the title of top selling agent for a fifth year.
